Chris Baxter's 'I Got Next', Shines a Light on Williams Syndrome and Bringing an Inspiring Basketball Story to Life at Dances With Films: Los Angeles.
I often say the problem with short films is that if they are really good you you’re left asking, “Where’s the rest of the film?” If they are really bad, 10 minutes can feel like 10 hours. Chris Baxter’s “I Got Next” is the prior. It is a compelling proof of concept for what deserves to become a feature-length film.
Screening as part of the KIDS & FAMILY PRO BLK 1 on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. during Dances With Films: Los Angeles (DWF:LA), “I Got Next” tells the story of Taylor (Emmy Coggshall), a 13-year-old determined to make her local basketball team. Taylor has Williams Syndrome, a developmental disability that presents cognitive and physical challenges. Despite her dedication on the court, her coach refuses to give her a chance.
Everything changes when Taylor meets Jayla (Bailey Bass), a former college basketball standout struggling to move forward after a family tragedy. Taylor convinces Jayla to train her, beginning an unlikely friendship that transforms both of their lives. As Jayla helps Taylor sharpen her skills, Taylor reminds Jayla how to embrace hope and family again, giving each of them an opportunity to chase a second chance.
The story is deeply personal for Baxter, whose brother has Williams Syndrome and served as a primary inspiration behind the film. That personal connection makes “I Got Next” an authentic exploration of perseverance, inclusion and the impact one person can have on another.
