Supervising Sound Editor Luke Gibleon Talks about Working on 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' - Interview
I recently spoke with Emmy Award–nominated supervising sound editor and sound designer Luke Gibleon about the art and craft of cinematic sound exploring how he discovers, records, manipulates and creates the sounds that bring fantastical worlds and unforgettable moments to life.
As Co-Supervising Sound Editor and Sound Designer on Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” Gibleon earned a 2024 Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Sound Editing for creating the immersive soundscape behind the series’ elemental bending, creatures, and expansive fantasy world.
A four-time Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Golden Reel Award winner, Gibleon’s honors recognize his contributions to “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” (Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing for Single Presentation Broadcast Media), “Togo” (Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing for Non-Theatrical Feature Film Broadcast Media), “Greyhound” (Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Feature Effects/Foley), and “The Underground Railroad” (Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Limited Series or Anthology).
Across a career spanning acclaimed productions including “Masters of the Air”, “John Wick: Chapter 4”, “Twin Peaks”, “Bullet Train” and “The Continental,” Gibleon has earned a reputation for blending technical precision with cinematic storytelling through sound, transforming everything from subtle environmental textures to larger-than-life action into immersive auditory experiences.
